Sky Slywchuk is a dancer/choreographer born and raised in Sudbury, Ontario. He is stoked to be returning for the fourth time with DWESS Sudbury to help raise funds and give back to this worthwhile cause. He first started dancing in his Mom’s basement to Britney Spears; self-teaching music video choreography off of YouTube. He began formal training at Sudbury Secondary School in Grade 11. He later took classes at Dance Evolution, Arts North, Sudbury School of Dance, and performed in earthdancers 2012. At 16, he took his first ballet class and at 17 he was accepted on a bursary to the Professional Division of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School. After graduating from the Arts Education program at SSS in Drama and Dance, Sky attended the RWB Summer Session in July 2012. At 19, Sky moved to Calgary, Alberta and diversified his dancing by taking the Jazz Extension program at Decidedly Jazz Danceworks. It was there that he got into dancing in high heels and joined the men-in-heels crew The Snap Boys. He eventually moved to Edmonton, Alberta where he danced professionally, touring with Toy Guns Dance Theatre, performing with Tony Olivares Dance, and teaching at Dance Code Studio. Sky had the opportunity and pleasure to train with viral-sensation Yanis Marshall in a 2-day intensive in Edmonton. When he returned to Sudbury in 2018, he spent a couple of years teaching at Zen Fitness and choreographed two seasons with the Sudbury Five Dance Squad. During the pandemic, Sky collaborated with Zoi Monroy to lead an online virtual dance class where they would team-teach their two respective styles in one class. In addition to teaching, Sky choreographed and performed in the annual Easter Seals Dancing with the Stars competition for three consecutive years. In 2022, Sky choreographed and performed in a short film produced with support from the Branch Collective as a part of the Northern Dance Film Initiative. The film premiered at the Sudbury Indie Cinema and later was featured in the Sudbury Tiny Underground Film Festival. Presently, Sky teaches foundational technique to the Nasha Rodyna Ukrainian Dance Ensemble at St. Mary’s Church. When he isn’t creating and sharing dance, he enjoys writing poems, short stories, and screenplays that he hopes to produce into short films in the future.
