As someone born and raised in Hamilton and who works as an Educational Assistant for the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board, I’ve always taken great pride in representing our city. Although a little rough around the edges, I don’t think anyone can deny its character.
I began dancing at age 10 and fell in love with the art immediately. Since then, whether through competitions or teaching, it has remained a huge part of my life. In the past few years, however, I’ve been encouraged to try and take my dance career down a different, more unique path. This path has been inspired by my experiences as an Educational Assistant and revolves around my goal of making dance accessible to children of all abilities and exceptionalities.
More recently, I’ve become even more inspired by the arrival of my beautiful daughter, Madilyn. My fiancé Nathan and I welcomed our daughter this past January, and she has truly made our lives whole. We are so grateful and excited to have her here celebrating with us tonight. It’s during my ongoing maternity leave that my idea has begun to take shape. Becoming a mother and watching Madilyn grow has pushed me to fulfil my dream, to promote a safe and joyful dance space for all children. Seeing what all beautiful, young minds can achieve has always encouraged me to give them more, to give them what all of us deserve: a fulfilling life.
Nathan and I want nothing more than for Madilyn to grow up in a world that gives every child such an opportunity, to express themselves and to feel safe in doing so. We want our daughter to know that love and respect are powerful things and that showing compassion for those around you is beautiful. This is why it is such an honour to participate in an event like this and represent Easter Seals because we share the same goal: the goal of giving children with a physical disability every opportunity many of us here tonight have had.
Thank you to my family and friends for being here tonight and supporting me, and to Easter Seals for allowing me to take part in this wonderful night for a third time. I look forward to celebrating with you all!
