Josh Taylor is a dancer, choreographer and artist-educator specializing in hip hop, urban dance, Latin and ballroom. As a lover of all types of music and movement, Josh started as a self-taught hip-hop dancer in the era of New Jack Swing, going on to study the funk styles of popping, boogaloo and locking, while completing his CDTA training as a ballroom and Latin dance instructor. As a continuous learner, Josh has travelled as far as New York and Germany (Urban Dance Camp) to train with some the world’s best in hip-hop foundations, urban dance, salsa and Latin. Some of his favourites to learn from have been Keone and Mari Madrid, Hilty and Bosch, Lyle Beniga, Chris Martin, Salah, Phi Nguyen of the Jabbawockees, Scott Forsyth, Suga Pop of The Electric Boogaloos, Eddie “King of Mambo” Torres and Osmar Perrones, Director of Yamulee.
As co-founder and Artistic Director of Defining Movement Dance since 2009, Josh instructs and performs throughout the Hamilton region and the GTA, teaching kids ages 3 to 92. Josh has created choreography for music videos, theatre companies and special events, such as the Hamilton Art Awards, the AGH CIBC World Film Festival, the PanAm Games and Supercrawl. Recently, he was awarded a grant from the Ontario Arts Council and in 2015, he was the recipient of the John C. Holland/Jackie Washington Award for Arts Excellence. In 2016 and 2017, Josh won five Choreography Awards for his work with his competitive youth hip-hop team, while his students won a total of 15 special awards individually. Josh also instructs at Xklusiv Dance Productions, RCM’s Learning Through the Arts, a member of the Hamilton Conservatory of Arts Dance Theatre Board and The Hamilton 7 Storytelling collective.
Josh Taylor is a proud born and raised Hamiltonian, a self-proclaimed hip-hop head, comic book geek and extreme foodie.
